not new, but new user name

I used this site a decade or so ago and no longer have access to that account, but that's not why I'm here. I recently got an 84 D50 4x4 2.6l and the engine blew up (head gasket, then vapor locked the engine on one of the cylinders and likely damaged a rod). I read a long time ago about the 4g64 engine being a wide block, but i have been having trouble finding the info again on it.

whats the deal with the 7 bolt vs 6 bolt crank shaft? and what if anything would prevent the use of a 7 bolt engine in place of the 2.6? starter location or maybe pilot bushing? are the later 2000 model eclipse and the like engines the same (other than the obvious being that they are fwd orientation)

I can post this elsewhere and I will continue to sift through the site info here, but if someone could direct me to a resource, I'd appreciate it.

I know, not exactly the right place to start asking questions, but I know someone will chime in to help direct me.

thank you, ill keep browsing around. I'm hoping to get to the wrecking yard this weekend and find something to swap into my truck.

the 4g64 7 bolt and 6 bolt use the same bell housing if they came out of a rwd mighty max/ram50. its a complete drop in and will mount up to your transmission no problem.

fwd 4g64 will not work. they are all narrow block. it doenst matter if its 6 or 7 bolt. if it came out of a fwd car its not working.

6 and 7 bolt refers to the number of bolts holding the flywheel. Also, 6 bolts have beefier internals compared to the 7 bolt but for everyday use you need not worry about this.

I plan on using this truck for a while, and I would like to fix it up some. its in really good shape for its age. I asked about the 7 bolt vs 6 bolt because I had read something about the 7 bolt flywheel being incompatible, and I was kind of curious in what way because I might be able to build something custom to fix it.
I read that the 4g64 were all wide block patterns, but I couldn't verify it anywhere via pictures and what not, and someone on the internet just saying something isn't necessarily a reliable source in and of itself.
I feel like I am kind of limited due to the fact I have the wide bell housing.
I also have an only Mitsubishi mighty max that is an 83, the running gear is good on it, but the body is about to fall off due to massive rust holes everywhere on it, and the frame is compromised by rust. That truck is a 4 speed though, and i would really like to keep the 5 speed I have.
I guess my next step is to look into finding out how difficult it would be to swap bell housings, or mix and match the 2 cases to make a 5 speed for the g63b in the other truck.

Hi 84d50. I am a new user. Stopped by your thread. Might be able to help you with your question on if your engine is wideblock or not. ThNk you for the link, but I already know that the g63b Ihave that works, is a narrow block. What I'm trying to figure out is how I can make the 4speed it is connected to into a 5 speed using the parts out of the 5 speed possibly.the current engine I have that is blown up is the 2.6l g53b.
Thanks for trying though. I am more looking for transmission info to see if I can even make the narrow block transmission a 5 speed.
My inclination is that it will not work simple due to the different shifter patterns.
