Is this a 1st or 2nd gen
This is probably not the right forum to ask. If it isn't I'm sure Camoit will move it. I just bought a 1986 MM. It has the 2.6L, which I think that is the first year for it...? But it has the Gen1 dash, the Gen1 front end with no corner blinkers. But Gen2-style Dual headlights (not quad). So.... Gen 1.5?

A new stallion in the stable. There might be another coming next month. I heard there was one that my city impounded. Hopefully it's at the auction.

Agreed, this is a 1st-gen. Those came with various headlight setups -- quad rounds at first (never sold in the US, AFAIK), then dual rects or quad rects depending on the marque branding, spec/trim level, and model year.
2nd-gen started production in '86 but was first sold in the US for model year '87, which may have started sales in late '86. Some states may issue titles by year of purchase or manufacture rather than the mfr's designated model year, so it's plausible some 2nd-gen '87s may be titled as an '86.
