Transmission swap
I'm helping my friend with his 91 mighty max w/ a 2.4. It got flooded a year back and the transmission is toast. We were going to rebuild it but the case has a crack. His is the r4ac1 trans which is an A500 right? Will any a500 bolt up or can ya'll point me in the direction of certain yr/make/models?
I really would like to get his truck back on the road.
Thanks!

just go pull one out of a van or basically anything w a dodge 904. they are the same

That's what I needed to know. thanks!

only the Mitsubishi version of the a500 will work. all the Chrysler/dodge ones have a completely different bell housing. that means you need to get an automatic transmission from a 1988-1996 mighty max or 1989-1996 van. all autos are wide block so you dont need to worry there.
another option is you can convert the truck to a Manuel transmission. you'll need this stuff listed below from a 1990-1996 truck. the transmission can come from a 1984-1989 2.6l g54b or truck from 1990-1996.
brake/clutch pedal bracket
brake
gas pedal
clutch pedal
clutch cable
clutch cable routing plate on the firewall(need to drill this out from the parts truck)
transmission cross member with mounts
flywheel/clutch assembly
engine back plate
engine bay wiring harness from the parts truck
driveshaft
shifter
speed cable
modify the tunnel so the shifter can go threw the floor
modify the transmission tunnel so the gas pedal will go fully to the floor( ball peen hammer works well here, its not as bad as you think.)
i went threw all this before.

any auto from a Mid- 90 up MMM / Ram 50 or Montero with the r4ac1 tranny off a 2.4 will work. 87 to 90 Autos were AW372 autos and are different.

i know the 88-89 also had a transmission in it that is exactly like the r4ac1, 4speed and all. i cant remember the name. you are right about the aw372. law dog had 2 of them a while back, pretty lucky if you ask me. they will fit but need the drive shaft, shift linkage, cooler lines, cross member and wiring. i would always find a chrysler auto on these trucks tho and very rarely would find the aisin. i should have mentioned them so nice catch. hopefully the op returns so that he can see all this new info.

if the bellhousing at the transmission is the same, you can swap bellhousings over too and get literally just the transmission swapped over. unless the bellhousing IS the transmission, then there is a problem
-
not all automatics have swappable bell housings on these trucks - the Montero page on FB has lots of info on automatics and swapping.
