I can get an entire engine and tranny from a 1989 Ram 50 for parts...
I don't really need the tranny since mine is an auto truck... but I'm assuming it would be a 2.4 and other than it being a carb motor, how much can be used as parts for my 1991 Ram 50 2.4 FI???
Instead of pulling my head and doing the work then putting it back on, I might just refurbish this head and just swap the heads one weekend..are they the same heads?
If it's a 2.4 (4G64) it wouldn't be a carb'd engine. If it is a 2.4 then you can use everything off it - except maybe the starter motor (bit of a grey area) and obviously the flywheel. If the manual trans is good then you'll be able to flip it and make some coin (nice bonus)
So it would be a 2.0? Everything looks so similar.
Is there anthing on the engine that would tell me?
Im hoping to use the exhaust manifold. It does have some sort of egr and solenoid mounted on the manifold that would need to be plugged.
If it's a 2.0 you have a couple of options. The exhaust manifold can be used but you will need to factor in the O2 sensor (easy enough done - good spot is where the EGR garbage is now connected). So this is where you might make a gain by using the 2.0 head. Good chance the combustion chamber will be smaller which means higher compression. And the cam is probably slightly more aggressive too (this was the case with a number of different capacity engines in the same generation - G3*B's were a prime example). So more compression + angrier cam = powaaah :thumbup:
(I'm not 100% sure on that but at least they aren't junk - you could even retrofit all the injection stuff onto the 4G63 if you wanted to be different...)
The weird thing is thos carb motor has an o2 sensor. Must be a feedback carb.
The Gen 2's are exactly that. It has all those awesome control systems attached to the carb that everyone loves working on...

Wad the only difference between the 2.0 and the 2.4 the bore?
The G63B engine has an 85mm bore - the 4G64 has 86.5mm. Most of the difference in displacement is made up from the piston stroke.
Did the FI 4g64 head have a crank position sensor or anything crazy that the carb head might not have?
the cam sensor is in the distributor I believe - you can look at the harnesses off the distributor to be sure.
^correct. Extra wire going into the distributor I believe (this is for the position sensor)
