4G63 swap or head swap

So I've been reading everything I can on these 2swaps an now I'm wanting a little insight from people who have done them as to which they think is easier.

So here we go I have a 91 ram50 its 2wheel 5spd 2.4l I'm wondering if it's is easier or more cost effective to just swap the dohc head or should I do an entire 2.0 swap. Either way I will rebuild whichever engine I go with an I will be adding performance parts. Next I don't do software so that will be done at a local shop. I will be up grading brakes fuel an of course as mentioned software an wiring. Will the stock 5spd handle higher horsepower or will I need to upgrade the internals, I would prefer a rw6spd from the foreign market not American. Any an all answers are greatly appreciated.

It will appear to be easier to do a full 4G63 twin cam engine swap but you will need to modify external coolant galleries for a RWD application. There are subtle differences with water pumps that will also require a few small mods. If you can - use a 6 bolt engine (1G). Going from a single cam to NA twin cam will yield maybe 20 HP - the stock 5 speed will cope with that easily. I have been wondering if you guys are seeing Hyundai Genesis 6 speed M/T's at sensible prices yet - might be an option if they're compatible...

With the performance upgrades it will be more than 20hp an I do understand there will be mods to the coolant tube. Is the Hyundai Genesis RWD then?

Are you going to turbo it also, or just the DOHC swap? Either way if you are going to rebuild either motor might as well go with the 4g64 and DOHC swap it. Either way you are going to have to do the same mods(intake mods, move the engine forward or bash the firewall in, etc.) might as go with the bigger/more tourqey motor.

Yes I will be adding a turbo. That all makes since. I won't be moving the engine forward or modufiying the firewall there is a guy on projectzerog that moved the cas to the front of the block with a mount an a modded it to run off of the crank pully.

64 require $$$$pending on rods. oe 2.0 rods r more than enough for most builds

I figured I would start with some minor machine work mostly resurfacing match port an polish by hand hot tanking everything new rods an pistons rings bearings better cams adjustable cam gears a decent turbo. My initial thoughts were to stick with the 2.4 block out of my ram50 an jut swap the dohc 2.0 head or if I can find a dohc 2.4 head using it. Then try and find a RWD 6spd an get a decent shop to do my time as I'm not that great with software.

Doesn't look it will be a compatible transmission with our engines - but a full drivetrain swap from a 2.0T Genesis is a possibility...

personally I'd never start a project with a rebuild
i'd just travel the beaten path - dsm 2.0 swap. Enough fine examples detailed
concentrate on getting the motor installed, up & running.
More than enough work to keep u busy and an old stock 2.0 will entertain u... frighten u if u poke it with a stick

u need 2ng gen head and oil pump housing crank trigger (rewired), if u ditch the rear mounted CAS

6spd suited to no torque wimpy peaky powerplants imo (s2000, miata, toyota 20v, etc)
for example; 2.3 sohc ford full wt 5spd street car go 10.8 1/4, traps 125mph in third gear... does he need 3 more gears ?

This thread could turn into "one of those things" but I'll run with it for a moment. Sure it'll do an ET of 10.8, but that is not congruent to fuel economy and drivetrain longetivity. Thus the reason why there aren't 3 speed transmissions in mass produced vehicles anymore (A/T or M/T) - crap fuel economy.

fuel economy is in the tune and your right foot.
the broad tq curve enables it to get away with 3 gears in the 1/4. More shifts would only worsen the ET
that 2.3 has a 3.21:1 diff ratio... it near 'idles' down the highway.
Gets over 35 mpg!, which is excellent for a 30+ year old 2 valve donkey with such performance
A 6speed tranny won't do anything for that combo.... I can't c n e one expecting more from that mill to be honest

sure they make 8 speed trannys today.... along with speakers that 'simulate' engine noises in the cabin etc..
they can keep all that crap - lol

4g64s and 4g63s use the same rods.

ya, meant to say pistons. Bolting a dohc to truck 64 block, starts with a chunk $$$$

Funny you say this, there is a complete 2009 Hyundai Genesis 2.0T at the LKQ Pull a Part in Greensboro and they are have a 40% off everything weekend. The was wrecked but the engine and transmission look good, I must have walked by it 4 times lol But I kept telling myself you don't need it.

Could be fate...:think:

genesis box looks almost as wide as the bellhousing. Get out the saw to hack up the tunnel/floorpan
motor not as strong as the mitsu 4G stuff either (I've read)
I suppose if u can score the drivetrain cheap enough, and your goals r not too ambitious
Truck/starion 5spd is puny plus much lighter, and has gone 11s. How quick would this street pickup be

There will be very few 4 cylinder engines with the same level of durability as the 4G63. The up spec Genesis 2.0T has an output of 204kW so there has to be some more room for improvement over that (base trim 2.0T is 160kW - figures are from wiki) and guys are always cutting out trans tunnels for SBC/trans combos so if you're not afraid of some cut and paste and could get your hands on a Genesis wreck for cheaps it would be something different.

weaknesses of the genisis motor vs evo, -only- when chasing BIG power...... was the topic of conversation
I've been singing the same tune throughout....
don't need to cut up ur truck + nothing more than stock low cost old dsm bits can result in a fast truck + a ton of detailed info available
those unique attributes is what makes the 63 most attractive imo
