How adaptable to modifications is the stock efi ecu?
Ie: bigger cam..more compression..headers
+1 on that. I noticed it has a port facing forward that is presumably made to pull codes but in my vastly limited knowledge of ECUs I can't help but wonder if it can be used to make minor modifications. I'd like to know if they can understand and adapt to boost as well.
I use a 1G DSM datalogger to read codes and datalog. I bought it to test my TPS, and to try and resolve my bogging issue (no luck yet). I read on one of these forums that our ecu is basically a dumbed-down DSM ecu. And some come with an EPROM chip that can be removed and reprogrammed. Still need to check mine.
I should look and see if the chip is removable...maybe play with it on my arduino..

It depend on what year and P/N the ECU is, early FI models have a Prom Socket, most don't. You can have them re-worked, or Buy one.
You don't need to modify the ECU to do a cam, compression or headers, or headers. I know I've done it. you need to do changes if you want bigger injectors, modify the timing, or change the sensors (MAF to Speed density, etc...) or up the Rev limiter. The ECU will adapt within it's limits for other changes you make.

Mike....could you approximate how much a programmable ecu like what you have would be retail cost and does it come with base set ups?
I used the AEM 30-1300 it cost $1,300 on e-bay, they aren't available any more, unless you know a Mitsu Tuner shop that has one still ion the back shelf.
i used to have an Apexi AFC II that is started with before the turbo to piggyback the Stock ECU to have some fuel management, but once i went turbo, it wasn't enough, and yes, I sold the Apexi unit.
