Catalytic Converter Delete?

Will the truck run perfectly fine without the catalytic converter or is it really necessary to have it on? I don't have emissions requirements in my state. The reason i ask is because the old catalytic converter is beat up and it's a costly repair.

Would there be any way to minimize the sound after removing the catalytic converter? I don't want this truck to sound like a race car.

:grinno::grin:no it's not gonna sound like a race car try first if or just put a resonator

It will run fine after removing the CAT. The cat is the round core in the manifold just after all 4 come together. The next thing down the pipe is a little resonator. It can be removed. The muffler in the back keeps it quiet. You won't hardly notice the sound change.

I finally removed the catalytic converter. Now, where do I scrap it for money? Made some shop made clamps too. Slathered some high temperature orange rtv on the ends of the pipes and then clamped the flexible exhaust connector where the catalytic converter once was. I still have other work to perform on the truck before I can start it and check for leaks. That will be another update...

That rotten egg smell. Is this the sign of a bad catalytic? I thought maybe this was an engine running too rich and the cat having to work harder to rid unburnt fuel.

I’d appreciate any wisdom on this and maybe I’ll take mine out too.

True, technically it's still a Federal offense to remove a cat if originally so equipped, even if your state/county doesn't inspect for them, tho' unlikely to be discovered without such official inspections. This is why any reputable exhaust shop will refuse to remove one except to replace with a new one.

That said, fortunately all modern replacement cats are of the coated ceramic honeycomb type, which were originally marketed as "free-flowing performance" cats back in the day, so unlike the old-school pebble-bed cats they don't really nerf performance to any noticeable degree unless they get clogged somehow.

...or "test pipe", bit of a codeword there because the only legal use of one would be to test if an existing cat was significantly clogged, by "temporarily" swapping it out with a test pipe.

Thanks for the information guys. I just started her back up and the truck didn't get that much louder. It's very hard to notice much of a change in sound.
