Hi all...I am at my wits end...never been stumped

83 Mighty max with 4d55....blew head gasket maybe 5 years ago...truck sat in barn till three weeks ago...installed a new 4d56 head recently, bled the fuel lines multiple times, new glow plugs...engine will act like it wants to start but doesn't , hours of cranking..

Specifics:

Valves adjusted cold to .15 just readjusted to .25 ..
Reused 4d55 injectors, snug in hole but are screwed in and no compression leaking.
When glow plugs are pulled, healthy compression shooting out of each hole.
Glow plugs functional and working...blueish tips from heating up.. 5 seconds..
timing has been double checked and is correct on all three indicators

Am noticing a lot of exhaust smelling (not white) smoke coming out of the valves under the valve cover...seems to be throughout the head...lot of smoke...

I'm ready to throw in the towel unless somehow has words of wisdom...

have you got it running yet?

mine did not want to start at all after i rebuilt it till i put a electric clicker pump in before the filter and a new fuel filter of course maybe even try disconnecting your glow plugs and give it a sniff of either

How much compression does the engine have? What color is the smoke

I just changed from a protruding valve 4D55t head to a 4D56 head and it is much harder to start. I am thinking that the difference in squish volume drops the compression. I can get it started with a bunch of cracks and a slow laughing start or laying on the glow plugs for a multiple 5 second sessions.

Does anyone know of some adjustments to wake the motor up some? Mine lost its zip with this change.

How much boost should I add above 8PSI to get it back to the stock compression? That is my preferred short term fix.

Any help is appreciated.
