There is an 88 mighty max with a 2.6 on Craigslist. Says it has a Weber carb. Also says that it will start and run for 5 min and die. Wait 5 min and repeat. What would cause this and would it be worth looking at?

Fuel pump is shot. Pump cool will pump fuel,Pump warms up the metal expands no more fuel pressure. wait 5 minutes the pump cools down metal shrinks and you have pressure again.

I would guess it has the mechanical pump. Then it's the coil or it's the pickup coil inside the distributer. Get it for cheep and fix her up like everybody else does. Once you get it running good you will love it.

Says it has a new fuel pump, spark plugs and wires, cap and rotor. Does it need an electronic fuel pump or something?

if he is running the stock mechanical pump and a regulator for the weber, it will blow the pump due to excessive backpressure. An electric pump is the best solution, mounted back at the tank. There are several threads on here on how to setup the electric pump, including an oil pressure safety switch for shutting off the pump when there is a loss of oil pressure.
