1988 dodge ram 50 sputtered then died on way home

The truck sputtered then died. I tried to see if it would start back up but it did like one solid crank then that was it. The truck has oil in it but I'm just lost on where to start looking

Welcome to MR50. If you turn the key to start, does it make a clicking sound? If you do the same with the headlights on, do they go out when you try starting it. If so, check and recharge the battery. If it then starts, test the alternator. It may have failed which drained the battery until the truck sputtered and quit.
