What is the best replacement for a stock coil from a first gen (1984 g63b). Mine has been having trouble with starting and acceleration under load. Was going to go with a Accel Supertock #8140 but read that they will overhead being mounted horizontally.

I've got and like the Herko B108 coil, says '87-89 (Gen2 carb'd trucks) but should work fine for Gen1 trucks like yours as well:

BTW, I dis/reassembled the mounting bracket to put the ballast resistor on the other side of the coil, for easier wiring access/routing.

There's also the Herko B226, basically the same coil and ballast resistor with a different mounting bracket, and comes with some wiring pigtails that might be useful if your stock wiring was bodged up:

^both are good picks for replacement coils. The transformer type coil (even the OEM ones) pack more punch than the oil filled cans. Aftermarket performance coils can cause grief with an ignition system if its the wrong impedance and can damage the ICM in the distributor.

*when replacing the coil, re-gap your plugs to 0.85-0.9mm and play with the ignition advance to gain power. Non US trucks have different tune specs to meet Cali/Federal emissions requirements
