Steering issue

Hello everyone,

40k miles since I rebuilt my MM with your help!!! Only a few minor issues along the way, very happy with this little truck.

Issue at hand: see attached photo.

Not sure what this part is called (???). Problem: just today, a light metal on metal sound showed up with any slight turning of the steering wheel in any direction. It's come from the rear (large) "spindle" in the part... can see it wobble when steering wheel turned and hear sound there as well.

Wondering...

a) name of part
b) can this part be repaired (I doubt it, but...)? I'm guessing there's a rubber bushing on the inside that gave out. If so, can bushing be replaced?
c) If it can't be repaired, anyone have suggestions for online vendor for it & part Mfg?

Yup thats the idler arm assembly
You can get new ones (confirm year of truck when ordering) and you can get bush replacement kits to repair

If the tie rod joint is ok on it you can get away with installing new bushes in it. Otherwise you're up for a complete assembly. As long as nothing is bent (check the shaft the idler arm is mounted to for wear/damage).

Hi Guys,

part (idler arm) just arrived, going to tackle it late this afternoon. Thought I'd ask if anyone who's done this job (I never have) has any sage advice. I'm working from the Chilton's manual. In particular, question: Chilton says: "Use a screw-type joint separator to split th ball joint at the relay rod". I don't have one... will I need it? Anyone have a photo of recommended tool?

Any recommendations/suggestions appreciated.
