Check that the secondary throttle vac actuator is working, the vacuum advance on the distributor is working and your ignition coil is not 15 years old, check your ignition tune (or retune it as the factory recommended tune nerfs these engines badly) and ensure your leads and plugs are all good. If your components are good use this method to tune your engine - first check your base tune that it is in factory specs. You may need someone to help as you will need the engine running and held @ 2000 rpm. Undo the retaining nut on the distributor and gently swing the distributor between advance and retard until you hit a 'sweet' spot and the engine rpm's jump by themselves. Find that point and dial the advance back just a touch, then lock the distributor.
You should get a noticeable improvement in mid range power. Let us know how you go.

I also believe if there is a vacuum leak it makes timing fluctuate along with chain stretch and wear. Etc. A vacuum leak can be detected by spraying carburetor cleaner around intake manifold/base of carburetor. Our rides are old but if we get close by moving and tweaking.....become as one man and machine as one adjust until it feels right. That is what I did to zone in. Feel the force young jedi. Let it flow through you. Yes
