I'm having a friend replace the alternator in my '90 Dodge (2.4L engine, "base" model).

We are having a problem with the timing belt. Friend has fully loosened the tensioner "spring." So now, he says he can get the timing belt out but doubts his ability to get it back on (because there is no "free play")

Do how the heck do you handle this problem???????????

Are you using any manual to make sure you do it correctly?
If he has doubts about his mechanical ability I would not let him try it. But it does make for a learning curve if he has already pulled the old one out.

I'm not really sure what you mean by free play? If I remember correctly you can just remove an Allen head bolt and it should release all the tension on the belt and you can actually pull the whole tensioner out. I'll try to link up the guide with pics if I can find it but really it's a simple job.

Actually if I remember right it's actually a 12 mil bolt below the alleb that you can loosen and just push the tensioner to the side and it will loosen the belt.

You don't need to remove the belt tensioner as this will only make the whole process a pain. You want to load the tensioner spring up as much as possible, then tighten the retaining bolt back up so the tensioner is out of the way. Install your new belt and release the retaining bolt on the tensioner. The load from the tensioner spring should be enough to set the belt tension correctly.
