Howdy I was wondering if I swapped an 84 amc 360 with throttle body in My 88 ram 50 with a limited slip rear end would my axles handle the stress?

Only one way to find out. Go ahead and have a backup waiting though. Give us some specs and details about the setup you plan to run and of course post some pics!

The Driveshaft and rear axle held up to my turbocharged Mighty Max with 30lbs of boost. The clutch and Transmission did not.

Plenty of people have swapped in v8's and have no problems. I run a boosted 4 cylinder and have never had a problem. Trannies are the issue, but you most likely will not be using a truck tranny anyways.

Not to get too off-topic, but do we know the range of the transmissions?

I think like 250-300 hp or so, maybe a little more. LSR Mike would definitely know.

The safe bet is 2 to 3 times what the original engines' HP output would be. DroppedMitsu's estimate is in the ball park. 300 HP would be it's critical load limit before it starts to eat itself. It will also depend on whether or not your transmission has a hardened thrust plate in it. Some manual transmissions have them, others not...

Cool, thanks!

300 HP will definitely destroy your Transmission. especially when you grab 5th gear at 140MPH.... The problem was case distortion, the gears ended up running on the ends of the teeth and stripped out the gear set.

I suggest a Tuff Pan http://www.tuffpans.com/ I used one on my rebuilt Transmission ($1,200 later) and did not have any more problems.

the stock axles are thicker than 31 spline ford 8.8 axles

LSRmike, how does your rebuilt stock tranny hold up?

I would like to keep a Mitsu transmission in my truck, but need it to hold 300wtq. What do you suggest besides the Tuff Pan?

We ran 12.60's on stock axles behind a pretty stout 360... the issue is finding a limited slip unit

Plenty of LSD units out of Monteros/4wd mighty max's out there. Also one made(no longer) by Powerbrute that can still be found.
