View Full Version : Is there a differential for even lower RPM on the freeway than 3.54?

I'm getting a car with a truck 2.6 and a narrowblock 3 speed without overdrive. It has the 3.54 rear end. I'd rather keep the A904 and get another ring and pinion. Was there ever another option for a rear end that will fit with a more favorable ratio for MPG? Either Mitsubishi or aftermarket. Engine is turning at about 3000 at freeway cruising speeds -- a bit too high for an old girl like this Colt.

Is it a mighty max rear end, if so the 6 speed 3000gt have a 3.307 gear ratio that should work

I'm not sure, but you rock Rahtid. Thank you.

Do you know which model years for the 6 speed Rahtid? I'm seeing one out of an AWD with a viscous LSD that's 3.54.

another option may be a rear gearset from the arrow / challenger / Sapporo / colt rwd cars - the 2.6 challengers came with 3.08s

If you can find a 2.6 challenger that people are willing to sell parts off, I'd be very impressed. However, I'd not like to see the asking price.

The Colt isn't an 8" rear diff, it's smaller. Thinking about swapping a truck axle for more gears, LSD and also disc brakes.

Isuzu Rodeo have a Dana 60 dif and they come with disc brakes. See my build thread for the year and how to hook up the parking brakes.

Dana 60 would be too beefy on this little Colt. But I remember you mentioning the Isuzu axle swap -- I want to do that on my truck.

Wow, a Dana rear end makes everything else so easy. LSD, a wide selection of rings and pinions. I'm definitely doing the Rodeo axle swap on my truck. Maybe I can use the truck axle and move it over to the Colt?

Sorry It’s a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo with a Dana 44. But yes you can get lots of parts for them. The super rare one is the Iron Man version for the Isuzu. It has the Dana 60 in it.
Just keep in mind the dif is off set so you might need to mod the tunnel.

You said the parking brakes were tricky? Did you come up with a solution? Sorry maybe I missed that in your build thread.

Noah, what you need is an AE86 rear end, you'll get gearing, disc brakes and lots of upgrade options.
the easier route might be an old mustang 8.8
gears are: 2.26, 2.47, 2.73, 3.08, 3.27, 3.45, 3.55, 3.73, and 4.10:1
width is 59.6"
here's some info on the AE86 axles

Are you suggesting this interchanges with the rear 4cy (8" diffs) or the 6cyl (9" diff)?
