I just bought a 1991 Ram 50 and the speedometer isn 't working.

Any ideas what the issue could be?

broken or disconnected cable - or the speedo gear lost teeth - only seen that happen once.

The cable is hooked up... will I. Need to pull the gear out?
I was gonna look to see if the speedo was unhooked from the cluster but can't figure out how it comes apart.
Are there any sources for speedo gears if it is stripped?

www.mitsubishiparts.com or www.oemmitsubishiparts.com for the gear. To pull the cluster unscrew the bezel around it, remove it, then unscrew the cluster.

I was thinking. ...maybe put a drill on the speedo cable to see if the speedo responds?

that would work if the cable is good

Found out it's a broken cable... snapped right in the middle

I have the part number MB415430 which is a speedo for a Manual Transmission Ram 50. Will it work on an Auto tranny?

I guess no... the part number MB415436 is for Auto

Well I can't get the cable in Canada... grrr...

Heck I can't even get the manifold to pipe gasket in Canada.

Now i have to order everything from the States.... :(

What's the problem, just order it from Rockauto.com I've been getting stuff from them for years. Yes it's expensive shipping but with the cost of the parts and the service I get from them it ends up being cheaper then getting it from a local Canadian retailer. I just ordered a full clutch kit for a Tercel and Parts + Shipping (overnight) + Tax's, duty, brokerage and exchange it was still almost $100cnd cheaper then getting it from Canadian Tire (Parts Source)

With the dollar at $0.77 it's getting expensive to get from the states. I hoped SOMEONE in Canada would have the cable... it was common with a ton of Mitsubishi vehicles

Also in Canada we didn't get Mitsubishi's till 2002 so everything was rebadged as a Dodge and Dodge only keeps parts for cars/trucks 7 years old or newer unless you're real lucky and find a NOS part.

Rock auto doesn't have the speedo cable

I have read that Toyota used the same cable... can anyone confirm this?

Anyone know if MB415433 would work? I can get a replacement of that from ATP Cables

Well a local parts store crossed over the md number and found an ATP Y861 speedo cable would work in my 1991 ram 50...
They were wrong...the end does not fit the end of the speedo gear in the transmission. .
This sucks...

So I found this interesting. I cut the end off the old speedo cable and welded it to the end of the new cable.
Now the speedo works as well as the overdrive now.
I guess there is some sort of feedback from the speedo to the transmission control unit telling it the speed you are driving.
I actually find the truck is running better.
Maybe not having a speedo kept it in open loop?

I'm just happy that I have a speedo and no more flipping a switch for OD...

Very interesting. I know the AW372 on the 87-89 models was all mechanical but I don't know about the A500 for the 90+. Is there an ATU?

ATU? What is that?

After much reading... the speed sensor is in the speedometer...

So No speedo equals No overdrive and the Computer has no idea how fast you are going.

So far 2 weeks on my welded up speedo cable :)
