1992 Mighty Max Alternator and Battery problems

I keep going through alternators and batteries. The alternator is getting resistance. Some guy told me it might me a short in the instrument cluster. The gauges work sporadically. Batter gauge tops 18 and then drops half depending on the day. Please help.

check your block grounds and battery grounds. also make sure the lower bolt on the alternator is tight
