Help Kick down/Detent Cable popped!!!

Well I'm back with a new issue...

My Kick down/Detent Cable popped and the transmission shop that has my truck can't find a replacement cable..

My question, is there an alternative vehicle source that uses a similar cable? I really need to get this truck going again as it is my only transportation...

Make = Dodge Ram 50
Engine = 6g63b 2.0 Liter
Transmission type = Automatic

Where'd it break? You might be able to use a screw lock/barrel thing if it snapped on the carby end of the cable and shorten the sleeve. I used one to make a custom accelerator cable from a MTB brake cable and it never let me down.

It broke loose at the Transmission.. is it that easy to to fix at that break point as well? just a lock barrel there too? or is it more involved at that point?

...anyone got an image for the auto kickdown cable? If it has a generic style end you might be able to knock something up on the cheap.

I am unable to get a pic of the issue. the truck is at the shop and it is about 30 miles from my house. the shop says it is a not universal hook up....

If anyone else here has an automatic tranny and had this issue in the past how did you fix it and where did you get the parts?

well looks like the Shop was able to save the cable. and just crimped a new end on the cable in the Tranny.

But i'll know for sure when I pick it up Saturday. I need to put it through the paces to make sure they did a good job....

Heh well the shop didn't save the cable as they said. what they did was just wrap some cable up in a ball and shove it in to maintain some pressure so it would shift when the RPMs increased.

I spoke with the parts salesman and he said it will work but I must make a minor mod to the cable to use in my application. He couldn't tell me what I must modify. Do any of yous guys know what must be modified for this to work in my truck?

I really need help with this as the Shade tree mechanic fix only allows my truck to shift up 3rd gear and stumbles big time when I try to use the over drive...

Look for a universal kickdown cable on the Lokar website - they sell them for street rods with engine / tranny swaps with different length sheaths and a variety of ends for the cable.

Ok I looked through the entire site Pennyman, but all thease "Universal" kick downs are for American transmissions. None for the Asian transmissions. Looks like I will somehow need to modify those cables as well.

But that the thing, I don't know what EXACTLY to modify???

I would assume I need to modify the end of the cable that connects to the tranny. But what end/connector do I need and where can find one to put on the cable???

Look up barrel clamps (specify cable end fittings) via a google search. You'll get a heap of hits for brass ends to modify a variety of cables. If you can find a cable end that will work in the transmission, all you'll need to do is cut the cable and sleeve to suit and use a barrel clamp on the kickdown linkage on the carby. I used one of these to make a custom accelerator cable and it was a no brainer to set up. Should be a similar deal for a transmission kickdown cable (not that I've ever had to crack open a trans to fit one...) and it should be cheap to make too.
