Wiper Switch fix ideas

Hey guys I have a 91 MM and the wiper switch arm broke about half way down. Any DIY mods I can try without replacing the whole unit for 200 bucks? Looks aren't really a problem.

you could try putting a piece of allthread or dowel up through the center and using epoxy or gorilla glue to hold the whole thing together... did that once with my old Beretta

I thought about gluing something but never thought about a dowel rod. also wasn't sure if the glue would hold or if I needed to add a clamp too.

ok I didn't know about those links. I don't mind a few bucks for a used but 200+ is crazy for a thousand dollar truck. if not ill just glue and engineer something.

If it's just the arm, I believe its held in place by a small set screw at the base, so you don't need the whole unit. They are usually pretty easy to find in salvage yards.

that's what i was wanting to hear but i can't find the part. Do you have to remove anything from the column?

A thousand dollar truck?? Mine was that way once. Now I'm into it 53+ times or more. But it was worth every penny I spent. It has kept me in the garage for 3 years. The wife and I have never been happier..

They are easy to remove,just tap out the set screw and pull out the arm and replace

Just looked on car-part.com and you can get the whole steering column for $50

thanks for all the responses. I'd pay 50 but not 200. I'll check around here and the links suggested. If not, i'll "modify" it. haha.

I went to two U pull it type wrecking yards last weekend and looked at five MM/d50's. For all that I found two useable multi-switches, one 1st gen and one 2nd gen. All the rest were busted up in one way or another. These darn things look like a weak point in these rigs. It was easy enough getting the steering wheel off -- loosened the center nut and one good hit to the back with a hammer and it popped right off. One hint, to get the horn pad off, there's a phillips head screw on the bottom way down in back. Gotta take that off first.

mine has a headlight switch on one side and a simple wiper switch on the right

I haven't had the time to dissect one of these yet. Can the individual switches be taken off the bracket and used on another bracket or it it forever a single connected unit?

I don't know on this truck,but on occasion I have pulled them down when I worked at a salvage yard and some was seperate...but if you look at the pic of this one it appears to be alltogether

I got one in the junk yard for 2 dollars I can figure out how to get the old one off. might just drill it out, but I dont wnat to screw up the new one. Ill post a pic tomorrow

^ thats wassup. mine's busted too and I cant find any in the local JYs. well it still works but feels like its gonna break every time i twist it. but yeah if u can get a pic up that'd be great. heck if u figure it out start a DIY thread on it, since I'm sure it'll come in handy in the future. thanks.

idk but from the pic looks like thats all one assembly. doesnt look like that bolt/nut u referred to can come off.

Bon't pull the bolt.. it's a wiper blade. The end is plastic. The arm has a U on the end. There is a little plastic release clip. You push it then slide the plastic end back toward the base of the arm. It is in the package with the new blade.

i believe he was referring to the wiper switch not the blade. and thats what the pic looks like too (the switch assembly for the wipers)

You should be able to just replace the arm

i just used plastic model glue to fix mine its help firm for 9yrs now

this might work just careful not to crack the plastic

gorilla glue works wonders. i even used it to attach trim b4.\

I drilled out the hole and it slid right off, new ones on so if you can find anyone that will fit just glue it on.
