I have my grandfather's old farm truck and im trying to get it running for my 14yo cousin to have as his first truck. It was running fine as far as i know when they got it from my grandpa. My uncle said he was driving it and it started blowing a bunch of white smoke, so he parked it and now, im fixing it. i drove it about 4 miles home from my work where i unloaded it and it had zero power, but ran, most of the way... about 3 miles into the drive, it started smoking profusely, then quit, then smoked and died and wouldn't restart. im not illiterate when it come to cars at all, i just haven't worked on one of these mitsubishi's yet. Initially, I'm thinking it's the head gasket, but like i said, ive never been into one of these trucks so I'm just looking for advice on what to look for, any tell-tale signs common with these trucks, tips on making repairs easier, etc. Any advice will be greatly appriciated.

Sorry to here you having this. It sounds like the head gasket. If you look in the manual section then under 216 manuals look for the Haynes manual for the montero. It covers your truck. For more info you can always go by the engine number and DL the manual that is listed there. It will give you lots of good info to start with. Pull the plugs and look at them. See how they look and let us know. But it sounds like a head gasket.

Most likely head gasket since u said smoke(white?) and no power. If its a 2.6l(g54b, has timing chain) then have the head checked as they are known to crack.

this is true. it happened to mine minus the large amount of smoke. more then likely if it is a 2.6l it was between the #2 and #3 jet valves. if im not mistaken those are notourious for cracking

well if it is the 2.6l then whoever looked it up at orielys is dumb as a box of rock. when i changed my headgasket i got it from there. also you may look at rockauto like camoit said. or theres always autozone or advance or napa or pep boys. its just a matter of picking your poison

Well, we pulled the head last night, and the head is worn down on the mating surface between cylinders 1 and 2. I am going to take it to a machine shop and see what they can do. does anyone know how far you can mill down one of these heads without having interferance?

The machine shop should have the minimum head thickness in a book some where.

Ok

The value you are looking for is .2MM maximum from the head and or Block.

Otherwise the cam timing will get messed up, and you'll need adjustable timing gears.

To add to LSR you can also get thicker head gaskets in order to avoid the timing issue. This is recommended for any engine that has been decked or head that has been shaved. They make 3 different thicknesses.

Best bet is find a new replacement that doesn't have jet valves as they are what cause these heads to crack. There are a few companies out there that make them without jet valves, Clearwater is one of the companies.
