Hello guys I ended up tearing down the topend and found number 3 exhaust valve burnt causing low compression in that cylinder . So I took the head to a great local machine shop who cleaned pressure tested resurfaced and replaced all exhaust valves. I pulled the intake apart while waiting on the head and found the whole egr passage plugged. The machine shop told me after leaving the head that the truck will most likely still smoke that these engines are known for the oil rings to become stuck and with the amount of buildup on the head the oil rings were most likely shot. So me being me hope for the best clean everything up put it all back together and....wow smoking was an understatement! Along with that the head gasket was leaking oil ??? On the exhaust side. Today I started over pulled it back down and will make another attempt pulled #2 piston oil ring was plugged with carbon and didn't spin at all does that mean its stuck? Or normal? Last thing head bolts I reused according to local dealer who said they reuse them? I torqued by the book it four steps. Sorry for the long book!:/

its always nice use new head bolts for proper torque and run a tap threw all the holes to make shure there clean for proper torque

Thanks for the imput I'm having a hard time finding new ones anyone have a good source ? I've found them for the 3.0 but none for 2.4. I tookk it all the way down and pulled the pistons to replace rings as it was smoking like a train and every oil ring was stuck and full of carbon...should they rotate like the comprssion ring? This is my first venture this far into a engine so please excuse my ignorance and lack of experience I just want to ask questions before I make a bigger mess!

You can always get a set of ARP head studs, then you can reuse them. About $120 for the set and you will need to trim some of the inside of the valve cover.

all the rings should move freely before you install the piston, just remember to off set each ring 120 degrees from each other.

ARP Head Studs for a 4G64? Nope, they don't make them. Been there, done that.

Had the same head bolt problem on my 83 2.0. No such critters anywhere. Finally called the shop that sold me the rebuilt head and in his 4 inch thick bible of cylinder head info, it plainly stated to reuse the old bolts which I did. That has been over two years ago on a truck that is driven every day with no problems out of it so far.

Well I picked up the new head bolts and they are shorter then the old bolts is that normal?? Also tried to get off the washers from the old bolts and they will not clear the threads.... Any ideas.?

How much shorter is the first question. They should be close with in 20 thousands or so. They do stretch but not that much.
There is an elastic state they work in. Once they get to long they can't stretch and shrink like they should.

It's more around half inch or better. Sounds like they ordered the wrong bolts! Maybe this is why finding new ones that are correct is so tough hell I dunno ill check back with them

Well I guess these bolts were special order news to me and they won't take them back. Looks like old head bolts are going back in and pray they don't snap. Anyways if anyone needs head bolts ill post the part number later as I'm not sure what the hell they are for.

Contact the main manager or owner. I would protest on them and say YOU ordered the wrong one, ether order the correct ones, give me my money back, or I'll drag you to court..... Also look on your paperwork for where it says there not returnable if incorrect.
