Bottom End Noise

Priced how much to rebuild just my bottom end (already have a new head). The shop wants between $2100 and $2400. Not worth doing for this old truck. My son is considering rebuilding the engine, but cannot start until late August as he is working at a summer camp. I was thinking of a 3.0 Swap, but not sure if it bolts up to his 89 auto trans. I would go turbo 2.6, but any 2.6 is a scarce as a unicorn here in NE PA.

Bottom end noise, either rod knock or piston wrist pin. Where are you located?
