just installed: crank fired Edis w/ Megajolt

:D Just wanted to tell about a project I just finished. I Installed a Edis 4, an wasted spark FORD enhanced DIS ignition system without cam sensor. The Edis system runs straight off a trigger wheel mounted on my crank pulley along with a VR sensor. Which throws away my distributor completely. It has the ability to program accurate ignition curves, shift lights, all kinds of other useful features through Megajolt which is about like Megasquirt without fuel.
The idle is smooth as ever and power is great. Timing is dead on. The project has enhanced all the mods ive done to this g63b 2.0 and I dont think ill ever be done tuning.

I will post pictures later tonight.

Does anyone know the stock advance curve for a 2.0 Nippondenso distributor or mechanical degrees?

378  379 380  The best thing about this conversion is that the distributor is totally eliminated. So, The timing is dependent on the crankshaft. The crankshaft as a trigger source will send the spark out perfectly on the right time because think of how much slack the distibutor gear, timing belt, sprocket has, so the spark wont be as precise when using a distributor against a direct fire ignition.
The EDIS system is a wasted spark ignition with two coils(2 sparks at same time, one on exhaust stroke one on compression stroke) so there is one coil for 2 cylinders which means the charge time for the coils is greater, putting out a powerful spark. I recently had my stock distributor with MSD Street Fire Ignition and the EDIS is much better.

Well its simple on how it works, but putting it together takes time and cost a little $$. I had my crank pulley lathed down then spot welded the trigger wheel into place. then made a bracket mounted on my timing belt cover to hold the vr sensor. then the rest is wiring.
This setup is perfect for carb blow thrus, turbos ect. allowing precise timing for boosting with map sensor or tps option. Megajolt allows laptop tuning while running down the road also.
check out the link, lots of information http://autosportlabs.com

I had it on my MPI Quest before the part out. Great reliable spark system and easier to set up and tune with MS then that stock distributor system

Sounds like a sweet set-up. Here's a parts set on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-EDIS4-EDIS-4-Module-COPS-36-1-Wheel-VR-MegaSquirt_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem2556631ca4QQitemZ160363125924QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Includes EDIS, crank wheel, trigger and 4 coil-on-plug units. It's on a buy-it-now for $75. Sound good?

That's not a bad price. Off the top of my head I can't remember what I paid for my whole set up, but it was definitely more than that. I don't run the coil on plug units though. I have an Accel coil for a 1.9L Escort and I bought a prewired harness instead of harness connectors with short wires. That was much easier than wiring the entire harness IMO.

Yeah i bought my edis parts off ebay from boostedengineering for like 75$ and the coilpack connector was broken with a nicked wire and one sparkplug wire terminal broke apart. The total cost and time did add up to alot but was worth it.

MightyG54BTMax, where did you find the prewired edis harness at? also did that accel coilpack have the clip on plugs or the regular plug on style? I would like to find a accel coil that will aceept regular plug wires. thanks

btw, cops is possible with edis but the edis is wasted spark, 2 plugs fire at same time. the cop with edis is unreliable and defeats the purpose of the edis cause the coil on each plug would fire double which would dwell and spark output.

I lucked out one day while searching ebay for EDIS stuff and came across it. Didn't matter though, VR sensor was still wired backwards. I had to cut and switch those wires. The Accel coil is for the plug wires with the little clips that hold them on. I had a set of regular plug wires on there, but I had to bend the ends so they would fit into the holes. It seemed like it would work alright, but just didn't want to trust it.
