Ok Im gonna start a new thread because my old one was an introduction and I had questions in there so its kinda a mess

Bought this 1984 mitsu 2.3. It won't start with the starter(just cranks over) but will start when pull starting. We pulled the front cover and redid the timing. Still does the same thing. Has 5 gallons of fresh diesel. Put timing mark on fuel pump right on still wouldn't start, tried advancing one tooth and still doesn't. We took the pump bolts loose and tried moving the pump while it was cranking and everyonce in a while it would pop likes its gonna start but still noting. Pull started and runs when pull starting. Replaced ground side battery cable and blew the fuse link for the starter somehow. So gonna have to replace that. I jumped B+ strait to the starter and it cranks over way faster now that we replaced the ground cable. It still doesn't start, thinking about trying a different injection pump and injectors, maybe it isn't getting enough fuel pressure to fire when the engine is slowly cranking. Glow plugs are new and have battery voltage. Im at a loss right now starting to think I wasted my money.

if you can do a compression test even if you have one of those old rubber tipped gauges just see if your over 300psi cyl pressure.

well did the compression test, averaged 200, lowest being 180 highest around 220. Looks like im gonna have to tear it down and hopefully just do rings. Dont really want to dump money into it but Im already in it. Where is some good places to get parts? Also does anybody have that tool to time the pump?

mostlikley your gonna need more than rings i guarantee you your cyl's are out of round and taper..... your either goonna have to bore or re sleeve the block. sorry but that is just how these little motors are. you can find stock pistons still and rings. itm also makes pistons and rings. and they sell that fuel pump timing tool on ebay. they are also for the vw diesel.

I tried finding the timing tool on ebay but had no luck, I pretty much figured its gonna have to have some machine work done gonna pull the head and see whats up

If you want help let me know. 818 268 3012. If youre gonna half ass is , I don't wanna hear about it cause you will have trouble. These trucks are worth putting money into if not a rust bucket. They sell in running condition from $2500 - $7000 depending on 2wd or 4wd and condition overall.

I got the head pulled today, all the cylinder walls are scored. There is a couple of gouges in the top of the pistons. I will get pictures tomorrow and post them. I am looking all over for any parts and I have found a couple of sites but all they have are bearings.

yes pistons and hard parts are a pain to find. but they are there keep trying..........your piston scores are probably from a turbo going boom,,,,,,,,,atleast that is what i thought on my 2 motors. but pm mike warme he can help you with parts......new and used for that motor. also those sleves in that block are just straight sleeves no lips so they are super easy for a good machine shop to find....good luck and welcome to the 4d55........ now trust me on this......that motor better be medically clean and everything within tollerances or in about 10 thousand miles it will go boom again trust me.....oh yea and one last things,,,,,,,,,,,no chinese parts!!!!!!!! i had a piston split in 2 pieces it wasnt fun.......

So I was searching for pistons myself last year, and here is what I found.

First, you might want to download the ITM parts reference.

In it you will find their piston and ring combo is part number: RY6314

Next , you might go to coolparts.com, who have a lot of ITM kits and search on that number:

And you will find that the current price is $58 for one piston and one set of rings.

The ITM pistons have been vetted by several members here. But I decided to get the OEM pistons, so I went to

if you drill through there you will see that a stock piston with no rings is currently going for $74.
I don't recall, but I think it was these folks that I ended up calling and ordering from. It looks like the search mechanism on the web for many of the mitsubishi parts sellers is identical, so I don't know if they are all the same company or what. I have a feeling that they are independant dealers, so you may have a good chance of calling them on the phone and negotiating a better price.

If you need to buy rings, mike warme recommended getting chrome rings. I found that sealed power has stopped making their set of rings, but Hastings still offers a set: (2C5666), so I bought a set.
(Do note that one of my rings was mis-marked, and had to be turned upside down.)

And also, if you decide to resleeve your block, you can find replacement liners are made by melling. If I recall correctly, you will have better luck searching for the 91.1 mm sleeves for the 2.6L gas engine (I think it is the 4G54), which shares many similarities with the 4D55. (same bearings for example).

On the subject of bearings, I think you will find the bearings are easier to source. You should be able to find them at:
