Did you use the pre-stroke adapter to set timing ERIK?

I am at the end of my rope. I went ahead and put a new fuel filter on it seeing as i have no clue when it was changed last. I bled the lines and it fired right up. Only thing is that it would pour white smoke out of the exhaust. My dad being a truck driver for over 30 years said it smelled and looked like too much fuel. Turned the pump down today and it ran. It would idle and rev fine sitting there out of gear. Put it in gear and let the clutch out and it would stall. Put it in 4wd low lock and it would move but sluggish as hell. I have the waste gate wired back like the previous guy had. This isnt a factor to me because it ran fine before. The timing is confusing right now. I have all the marks set dead on and now it wont even start. I am tired of getting something figured out and getting kneed in the balls! I just wanna have someone else fix it but dont have the money to do that. So i have to fix it and i will need super simplified instructions and pictures. Please help guys i am very close to just quiting...even knowing i will regret it for the rest of my life.

i think i am done boys.........i redid all the timing. all marks lined up. tried to start it and it wouldnt start again. she shook like a chihuahua in a snow drift and i heard poping such as the compression and then .........i heard the starter make a grindind sound. To me it sounds as if teeth broke off the starter gear or flywheel. i was super pissed and depressed at the same time. Its like no matter what i do to this truck its just too big of a POS! The only diesel mechanics i can find to look at it are dealers and only know big diesels such as tractors and tractor trailers. and the other half are busy with harvest right now. this truck was my first truck and i have had it since i was 13! i have almost had it ten years!

ok after some time away from it and talking to my mom and grandma (two big helps and supporters.) We have decided that we are going to ask a mechanic that has done work for us to look into it. An this will be my christmas/birthday/christmas/birthday present. The mechanic allows you to pay for the work done in payments so that really helps. If it comes down to it what would a rebuild cost? Mike? Tye? Anyone thats done this? What am i looking at for $$ to do this and mike do you have the parts to make this happen? I would like you mike to be the place i get the parts because you know what is good and not. Also i just got a motor for my 2wd D50...i hope i can shoe horn it in there when the time comes.

Hello all. I have returned. I have not given up on nor done anything to or with my diesel. Its been too cold and too much been going on. I just got internet back now and i accumulated another truck. I bought a fullsize Dodge from a buddy to help him out and for the new tranny in it. I have been driving my dads 99 cummins and loving it...except for the gelling factor.

Anyway I need some ideas to check. First off i will have to see why my starter was making a horriable grinding noise. To me it sounded like teeth were taken off the starter gear or flywheel.
