fuel shut off switch

Does the fuel shut off switch open or close when the iginition is turned on? Does the switch need to be opened or closed for the truck to run? 1985 Dodge Ram 50 Diesel. Thanks Ray

it turns off. It opens when key is turned to on. Has to be opened to run!
