Bored Spring Break Rebuild... - 02-17-2009, 06:47 PM
Ok, so spring break is coming up and the GF is going out of town with her sorority sisters. This means I have her car all week so that I can tear down the MM! I'm going to be pulling the engine and trans. For the trans I'm just going to replace the clutch and have the flywheel resurfaced. As for the engine... I'm doing the main bearings, rod bearings, piston rings, cylinder hone, head gasket, valve seals, valve gasket, lifters, new oil pump, new timing set. Anything else?? I'm trying not to do any machine work because of the lack of time... plus I'll still be working almost 60 hrs. that week so this will be a nightly thing... so can't get too complicated anyways. Just the usual overhaul!

If anyone needs some pictures of anything during the process... hit me up... I'll see what I can do!

OH for those inquiring... it's a 92 MM, 5speed, with 2.4L EFI

UPDATED... (Lots of PICS) - 02-28-2009, 11:53 AM
Ok... so here's an update... this project is going as planned starting March 7-14th.
Here are all the things I have so far... I'm still waiting on my rear main seal and Main & Rod Bearings... Also pick up some gear oil, and my universal Joints for front and rear.
In the last pictures you'll also see I'm putting on some Toyota 4 Runner 15" rims with tires... They will be bored (if needed) and powder coated Black before install. (May not happen during Spring Break)
So far though... ***PICS***

Ok, little update so far... Started on it when we got off work at 5pm and stopped at 9. Things accomplished, the engine and tranny are out of the truck and seperated... all bolts and accessories are in baggies and labled. All accessiors (WP, Alt, ect.) are placed on a bench out of the way. And pictures of EVERYTHING were taken! The engine is still on the cherry picker only because our bolts for the engine mount were too short and Lowe's closed too damn early to go get some tonight, or we'd have it all ripped apart by now. Anyways, tomorrow morning I'm headed to go get the bolts for the engine stand, then it will be getting disassembled. Then cleaned painted and ready for honing, and re-assembly! While that's going on I'm dropping off the head at the machine shop to get pressure checked and resurfaced. Plus valve job, ect. Once that's done Re-assemble and back in the engine... hell I said it would take all of Spring Break but it's looking like maybe just a few days... if we didn't have to wait on the machine shop! I'll keep this updated. Once it's done I'll post pictures and 'how to' for changing things like valve seals, ect. For those of you that wanted it. Anyone need pictures of anything in specific, just PM me and let me know I'll do my best to get a picture.

I dropped the head off at the machine shop today and got a hell of a deal so I won't be lapping the valves and replacing the seals myself. So I'm letting the machine shop do it all including a 3 angle valve job and redoing the lifters. $150! The head will be back on Monday afternoon, so if I really wanted to be efficient I can have it running Tuesday afternoon! But I think I'll stretch it out till Wednesday for good measure! I'm still taking pictures of everything and I'll be posting soon... so keep an eye out!

Ok, update for the night... today I got alot accomplished! Block degreased, pressure washed, laqour thinnered, taped off, primed (500*), and painted (500*)
New rear main seal installed, All new Main and Rod bearings installed. All pistons were cleaned wire wheeled and installed new rings before installed into the head. Everything torqued to spec... Transmission cleaned pressure washed and painted to match. Now just waiting on the head to come back from the machine shop so that I can finish.

On my "still to do list":

Clean up all 'intake' related parts ready for paint!
Oil pan cleaned and prepped for paint
Find a Oil Pump Gasket *(VERY IMPORTANT)** -any assistance would be appreciated!
Valve cover cleaned and prepped for paint

Then some more reassembly!
Keep'n it updated!

$5.13 total cost for the oil pump gasket from the Dealer... but I have to wait 2 days... so it will be here Wednesday morning and I can finish! I've prepped and painted almost everything... I'm working on the intake manifold and oil pan right now. I've done the whole engine so far in 500* & 1200* high temp Silver. Except the Exhaust manifold and Valve cover, (soon to be oil pan). They are both 2000* flat black, which looks BAD ASS! Post pics as soon as the job is done. Everyone check back constantly cause when the truck is done and running this thread will be FLOODED with pictures! Like 100+ I'm thinking!

Small update... the gasket is in... I'm headed out to install it now. Once that's installed I can start on everything else. Last night we got the head back from the machine shop, installed all the new lifters, seals. Torqued it down with the new headgasket. Then we 'placed' the valve cover on top to see just how nice it's going to look, let me tell you! So 2 days till the original "WEEK" is over to have this done, and if all goes well and I don't get called into work today we might be able to drop it in the engine bay sometime today. If work calls to screw everything up it will be tomorrow! Pics to follow soon though, as soon as I get home to my computer (using a buddy's)

THE MONSTER IS IN THE ENGINE BAY! Got it all together today, painted and bolted up. Dropped it into the engine bay and got it on the engine mounts before it got to dark, just have to do the wiring harnesses, fluids, and final checks. Then fire it up! (crosses fingers) As long as no mishaps happen... I will be DRIVING again tomorrow! Then pictures soon!

Well it runs! Has a slight lifter tick and still working out the wiring for the electric fan controller that I got from O'Reilleys. But for now we wired the fan to a switch and works like a charm! I'll have it home tonight and try to start uploading the pictures tomorrow.

Anyone know how to adjust the lifters so that they don't tick as much. A buddy of mine said since they weren't "SOAKED IN OIL" prior to install that it will naturally occure and quiet down and truth the this?

It took about 10 minutes tonight, but we pulled the lifters back out, and they are soaking. So tomorrow after work they go back in and I'm 90% sure the tick will go away. I'll let everyone know ASAP! If so then I will make sure that anyone doing a rebuild in the future knows the correct procedure! I got the electric fan wired up using the "thermostatic fan controller Part #3647" from O'reilley Auto Parts. Also wired in a direct bypass switch just in case the controller doesn't work or it get's to hot! Anyways, I'll update tomorrow!

EVERYTHING's Done... drove home (30) miles flawlessly! The lifter tick is a thing of the past! If anyone wants to know SOAK YOUR LIFTERS BEFORE INSTALLATION! Now for a break-in period then I can start giving it hell again! Here are some pictures...
More to come... these are just a before/after tease!

BTW: I have pictures of just about every part or piece or area of a 2.4L engine if anyone needs to see something specific!

I have a little over $600 total in all the parts and misc items. If you have some of the things already then you'll def. save some money. I did it over the span of a week. So timing was critical. Make sure you but PLENTY of carb/brake cleaner! Oh, and alot of Scott Shop Towels. Other then that, If you plan on doing as much as I did, go to the mitsubishi dealership, or try to find a "FULL REBUILD GASKET SET" Felpro makes one... it would have made things A LOT easier... but hindsight is always 20/20 right?

New timing is always a good ideal when you have it all apart. I'd recommend Gatorback, never failed me yet! Great quality. Run you roughly $80! Worth it! Oil pump, unless you had a problem with oil pressure before I wouldn't worry about getting a new one. But if you insist I'd call the stealership, priced roughly $190! Are you going with standard bore piston rings? Or getting stuff machined? Make sure you LUBE up all the bearings and seals prior to installation! Oh and new lifters, make SURE YOU SOAK THEM prior to installation!
