4D55 Engine Parts Source

I am needing some parts to get my 1985 Mitsu Mighty Max running again. I purchased this truck from a guy at work in a non running condition.

I figured out that the engine skipped time and broke the #3 intake rocker arm into about 5 pieces. The #1 and #3 intake rocker arms are cracked. The keepers on #1, #2, #3 Intake Valves were also damaged. I checked the intake valves to see if they were bent on my lathe and they did not appear to be damaged. I am in the process of lapping the valves to see if I can get them all to seal with the one set of good retainers and keepers that I have. Can I just replace the keepers w/out replacing the retainer?

It also looks like the #1 Glow Plug burnt and put a pretty good mark in both the head and the piston. I have cleaned that up on the head to remove the high spots but have not got to the piston yet.

I am having difficulty finding a source for the intake rockers, and the valve spring retainers. I have been trying to get OEM Mitsubishi Parts to give me a call back with no luck.

I have found all of the other parts that I am needing on Rock Auto but would like to get OEM parts if there is a source that will not kill you on the prices.

If any of you have a good source for some of these hard to find parts please let me know. (I already bought a rocker arm from Dirt before I knew what else I needed :x )

List of Parts needed.

Intake Rocker Arms x2 - ???
Intake Keepers x8 - Rock Auto
Intake Valve Spring Retainers x4 (are these needed or can I re-use the old ones?) - ???
Upper End Gaskets (Head Gasket, Intake, Valve Cover, Valve Bonnets - Was looking at the Fel-Pro kit on Rock Auto)
Timing Belt - Rock Auto - ???
Timing Belt Tensioner - Rock Auto??
1 Glow Plug - Rock Auto ??

Thanks for the help.

All the stuff you have listed that you can get from rock auto are OEM quality. The head gasket can be purchased from the dealer for 53 which is actually cheaper than rock auto and according to Mike Warme superior. I don't think valve covers are available except used or from Japan. Fel pro valve stem seals are fine.

For individual arms (and whatever else you can find) look on ebay: search 4D55.

I am swapping a 4D55 blown head for a 4D56 and may be able to help you out if Mike doesn't have some of the parts. Valve keepers are going to be very difficult to find. I also have a complete rocker arm that I won't need but won't break it up. The rest of the valve spring assembly, retainers, etc. should be fine as long as they're not damaged to cause the spring to not sit or seat right.

My new head is a few weeks out but once I've nailed it down I can help you out, send me a pm with your email.

Yeah, but it will take a pry bar & cold chisel to get them out of your hands.

That is pretty funny. I was finally able to get ahold of the Mitsu parts place. Seems like their website did not send in my first e-mail. :x

Oh well. I am still not done lapping the valves to know if I am going to need other parts yet.

Thanks for the help and I am going to send Warme an e-mail.

Hopefully I can get this thing running again. I guess I have to find time to work on it first. Maybe the possum in my barn will fix it! :D

Well unfortunately I have decided not to fix this truck. Most of the problems with the truck are listed above. The final blow was the amount of wear in the cylinders with some scuffing. The engine is salvageable if someone is willing to have some machine work done to it. I have not been able to mic the cylinders since I don't have an inside mic that big.

If someone needs a good parts truck and lives near kansas city please let me know. Otherwise it is going to the scrapper. I was wanting to save this truck but it will not work for me right now.

The truck is complete. Please send me a PM if you are interested. I would like to get rid of the whole truck but if there is something specific your are interested in please let me know.

Put in on ebay. It will bring $500-$1200 depending on body condition even with the motor apart. Otherwise let me know because I'll buy some parts from you. Either way people have had luck with parts on ebay. Everybody is looking for something on these diesels
