4bt cummins swap

Postby mopartechnician » Sat May 15, 2010 9:47 pm

anybody every tried to swap a 4bt cummins into one of these trucks. A guy I work with bought a skidsteer with one in it and he is gonna scrap everything out and I can get the motor for cheap. Don't have specs on how much they weigh but I will find out. If I don't get the truck sold I think this is about the only way to go

That would be cool. Just keep in mind that the engine weight is around 1100Lbs. Then there is the trany and clutch.

Im pretty sure I would go with a nv4500, my buddy has one that we pulled out of his cummins. Looks like it would be an easy swap, gotta figure out if the engine is a turbo or not.

4bt weighs about 700lbs, a 6bt(5.9) weighs around 1000.

So let me get this straight. You dont have money to fix the motor right? But you want to waste your time hacking up the truck to put a motor in it that is from a worn out old tractor and wont last either. Your gonna spend money doing the fab work and getting a transmission to fit. Just fix your old motor or save a few bucks. Its not gonna cost a whole lot to rebuild your motor. Plus it won't be worth squat without the original motor in it. At least if you bite the bullet and fix it you would have a truck worth a minimum of 3k. Its not a rust bucket so fix it right and dont hack it up like everybody who slams their truck and never finishes it or makes it look like a beaner mobile.

honestly I could care less about resale value and I guarantee the cummins is 100 times more reliable than the mitsu motor. Ya I don't have the money to fix it but I am trying to brainstorm on what can be done. I know I'm gonna have atleast $1000 just in parts for the mitsu motor. I can get the cummins for cheap, tranny for cheap and since I do diesel performance I can get whatever I need for it for cheap. Trust me this thing ins't gonna get "slammed", I don't actually care what the truck looks like all I care about is how powerful the motor is. Obviously nobody wants the truck because I havn't had one bite on it, these things aren't popular out here espcially a 2wd.

I have had plenty of cummins motors. They wear out just like the mitsubishi. They dont last 500000miles. I got rid of my 3 2001 dodge rams cause the lift pump and injector pump issues. Tons of money just to repair the fuel system.

Well as we all know, there is an easy fix, get a good lift pump with a lifetime warrenty and a fuel pressure gauge

And yes they are million mile motors, there are a handful with a million origional miles. I have seen 2 year old trucks with over 300,000 and no crankcase pressure. I was a diesel tech for dodge for 5 years and worked on them everyday, so your not gonna convince me that a mitsu motor is gonna last longer than a cummins.

Im not saying there better. Im just saying its a waste to try and rig up an engine thats 2 times as heavy into a little truck. Also the skid steer is junk anyways. So what makes you think the motor is so great. And if you are a diesel tech, you should have known this motor was shot when you bought it!

HAHA just because the engine doesn't start doesn't mean it isn't bad, could of been timing, injectors, fuel pump, anything. My buddies acted the same way and was a couple of teeth off on the timing so we figured that is what was wrong with it. There is no way I would of known the walls were scored.

The engine in the skidsteer is good, the guy that owned it fired a couple of employees and they tried starting it on fire.

Im not saying that I am going to do it, I was asking if it has ever been done. It isn't impossible but like I said before I have had no bites on anybody buying the truck so I am stuck with either scraping it out, rebuilding it, or repowering.

imo, if you wanted to do the 4bt swap........there is a trans adapter for a gm trans. put it into a short wheel based 4x4 chevy and enjoy. just my $0.02 it would be much easier and cheaper. it is the exact same set up as a snap-on truck or bread truck whatever they are?????
!!!!Real Trucks Don't Need Spark Plugs!!!!
or Chinese parts!!!!
