Can the old "paper clip" trick work to get codes

I have a '90 V6 4X4 that is showing the check engine light now. I have an OBD II scanner which is totally useless on this truck, and I'm just wondering before I go buy an OBD I scanner, will the old trick of using a bent paperclip to connect the ground wire and one of the ECU wires in the plug under the dash work to get the truck to flash the diagnosis code to me at the check engine light ?
42 = 4 log flashes, 2 short ones, etc....
Is it possible on the Mighty Max ?

No but the codes can be pulled from the obd1 port with an analog meter or led test light.
