Good Day, Turned Bad, Turned Good...

Postby RusTy Max » Thu Feb 04, 2010 4:52 pm

The other day my alternator took a DUMP! (my 75amp Mitsu Van upgraded one) [This is the second one, so I decided to go back to stock]
So today started out as any other... Good!

On my way to the post office I blew a tire! I mean, come on, these things are still practically brand new (see pictures)... BAD!

So after a $50 tow bill to my garage, put the truck up on the lift got the rim/tire off. I called Sam's Club (where I got the tires) luckily I have a 'road hazard' warranty. So it's covered. After that I replaced my electric fan setup back to the mechanical setup. Replaced my alternator back to the stock one. Took off and replaced the valve cover gaskets, and grommets. Changed the oil, replaced the gear oil in my transmission, replaced my antifreeze, and replaced my spark plugs.... GOOD! Now tomorrow I have to go get the tire replaced at Sam's, stop by advanced auto to replace the alternator and then sell it on ebay. Then the truck is going again.

I also attached pictures of the D-50 Sport center console with the Integra center console installed in the truck. I think it's a perfect fit!

I'm guessing the electric fan setup, cause everytime I'd turn the lights on and the fan would kick in (to cool) and the voltage would drop to 11v. I'm thinking it's because the pulley on the 75A alt. was much bigger than my stock one. Either way, then the belt would squeal till it got back up to 14.4v and then stop... this eventually killed the alt. TWICE! So back to the mechanical fan and stock alt. I went! Lights on, radio blasting, fan on high, A/C on... everything working my voltage stays constant! Weird I know!

So amp draw from your fan was too much for the alternator?

What electric fans were you running?

Also, when I did the van alternator swap I swapped out the pulleys too on my swap. Mine has been running for almost 2 years now.

I didn't change the pulley, I should have maybe. I was just running a stock old Ford Escort fan. I think if I would have changed out the pulley it might have been better... That could have been my downfall... but I think with the bigger pulley, I think the draw was bigger than the output.
